Brighton High School offers NYS Driver Education through Monroe One Educational Services (BOCES 1) contract. You can prepare yourself for registration by locating the Student Information Sheet and Class Calendar at bcsd.org/bhs (Students drop-down menu; Driver Education - General Information).  Driver & Traffic Safety Education in New York State is a course implemented via a partnership between the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The Driver Education course aims to educate current high school students (ages 16+) about appropriate driving skills and habits and playing a responsible role in the highway transportation/safety system. Course highlights include 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of behind-the-wheel training and observation. Students who satisfactorily complete the course can receive the MV-285: Student Certificate of Completion. The MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion allows:

1. a NYS Junior Permit holder to schedule a road test, 2. young drivers a possible reduction in automobile insurance cost (participation is dependent upon insurance provider participation), and 3. a 17-year-old to receive a senior license (MV-285 form must be submitted to local DMV to attain this benefit). Detailed information about NYS permits and licensing is available at: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-learner-permit.

The fee for this course is $590. The fee includes a 3.5% administrative service charge for credit card transactions. The Summer 2022 session meets Wednesday, July 6th through Thursday, August 11th. On July 6 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., there is a mandatory parent meeting to meet the instructor and hear an overview of the program. All lecture classes meet at BHS on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 12:45 - 2:15 p.m.  There are four driving groups open to students. Group A meets from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. and Group B meets from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Group C meets from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and Group D meets from 2:15 - 3:45 p.m. A calendar with specific class dates is available at bcsd.org/bhs in the Students section of the website.

All registrations are completed online. Registration begins at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14th. The website enrolls students on a FIRST COME; FIRST SERVE basis. If the class is full when you register, you are strongly encouraged to join the waitlist! If you are on the waitlist, you will not be charged the registration fee. If many people are registering simultaneously, the class can fill rapidly. It is in your best interest to register at 8:00 p.m. the day registration opens. Waitlisted students will only be contacted if a place in the class is available. That message comes by email within a day and includes specific directions about paying the class fee over the phone. If you do not get added to the class from the waitlist, there are other options you may want to consider: Waiting until the next BHS session to register (there are four offered annually – winter, spring, summer, and fall) or finding an alternate certified NYS Driver Education program (e.g., at another public school district, a private high school such as Harley or McQuaid in Brighton, or a driving school that offers group or individual lessons).

After you are registered, a receipt is sent to the email account of the registrant. Registered students (and their parent/guardian) will receive a detailed email from Community Education announcing the driving group they have been assigned to. This email is sent the day after you register. Once you have received this message, you must send a copy of the front and back of your driver's license or learner's permit to Cynthia_Dillard@boces.monroe.edu. She can accept a photocopy or a photo. You must complete this task by noon on Friday, June 17th, or within three days of your registration, if you register after March 11th. If you do not email a copy of your license or permit on time, we may have to forfeit your reservation in the class.

Be sure to read all informaton on the Student Information sheet when it is emailed to you after registration. It can also be accessed at bcsd.org/bhs in the Student section. This information is essential to read before your class begins.
